friendship game :-)
A downloadable game for Windows and Linux
play as lee, and explore the relationship between you and all your friends. meet all of lee's eccentric, kind, interesting, rude, romantic, and silly friends and gain a new understanding of the complexities of balancing relationships with emotional effort.
the demo version is meant to exhibit the art style of my friendship game and introduce all the characters. the art style layers pixel art over scans of fountain pen drawings, and has a cellular automaton in the background. i hope it communicates the softness of relationships against the hard barriers that we draw through and around them.
there game has a cast of thirteen characters, and will explore issues such as mental illness, child abuse, finding one's identity, cliques and how to fit in, chronic illness, and issues of queer teens. these are all very personal issues, relating to me or people around me, and i hope i can communicate them with care. as well as diversity as it relates to our society, the cast also has a diversity of character designs. there are talking bottles of glue, literal tentacles, non-vampires, and little creaturey things.
the full game will feature more mechanics like a "snack" resource management representing the emotional energy it takes to spend time with your friends, a world map, and a branching episodic story.
the music in the demo is by jay bernstein, but i hope to incorporate other of my friends' work in the future of the game. the character design was done by me, ben rocheteau, cam miller, daniel munic, jairo mora, jay bernstein, mae guenther, naman bhushan, yves., and zeke levi.
the linux version requires an installation of pygame, which i have provided, but you may need to install it with pip if the imports don't work. sorry!
